Question: How do you name the species that you find?

Keywords: ,

  1. Well firstly you have to try to identify the animal as close to the species name as you can. So when I found a new species in the Family Pilargidae, I knew it was in the Genus Hermundura, and there are about 13 known species of Hermundura.

    Kingdom: Animalia
    Phylum: Annelida
    Class: Polychaeta
    Order: Aciculata
    Family: Pilargidae
    Genus: Hermundura
    Species: unknown

Then you go to all the Scientific journals and collect all the articals that have been written about Hermundura. These papers describe the other species in detail. Then you compare your new species to the others discriptions to make sure it is new and different.

Once you are sure then you can deside on a name. You can name a new species after a place, a person or a character on the animal. Then you look in the International Code of Nomenclature book to see all the rules about turning your name into a latin name. so for example I named one worm after my father – Philip so to turn this into latin (and because it is male) you add a ‘i’ on the end… hermundura philipi. I named one after my mom wendy so this is female and the ending is ‘ae’ so it is Hermundura wendyae.

After you have name then you write a journal artical describing your new species and what its name is and try to get it published in one of the journals. It can take quite a while to do this.
