When it is stormy, at night, when it is flat calm, etc. You have to observe, how things interact with each other, and sometimes just follow a bit of water to see how it changes rather than stay in one place and observe the water passing by. Robots can stay at sea for a long time. The ARGO float is simple. All it does is sink, wait a while and come back to the surface while measuring stuff. They can stay at sea for 7 years and have revolutionised our understanding of how oceans move and mix.
