If I am traveling for work purposes, for example, going to a conference or collecting samples, then yes my expenses are all paid for by my work. I don’t pay out of my money.
It depends how much money you have been given to do your research project though. Each project is different. I have quite a large amount of money to do my research because its very expensive to do genetic work. But if you have been given less money then you would have to either try and get more money off travel grants or just not travel anywhere for the project. 🙂
