Question: inside a plant cell is the vacuole made up of salt water or fresh water?

Keywords: , ,

  1. its not freshwater or salt water, we call it saline water or solution. It is a liquid with just the right amount of salts (NaCl) for our cells to function properly. There is also other stuff in this liquid, like RNA, proteins, Amino Acids, all the building blocks to make our cells and bodies work.

Saline solution are used by doctors and in medicine. If a patient is in hospital and they can’t drink or absorb water then the doctor will give them a drip, to hydrate them. but you can’t put freshwater straight into our bodies because we have a natural level of salt in our cells. so a saline solution is used as a drip.

  2. Hi reddwarf3705,

Vacuoles can be used inside the cell for different things, so I guess its function will determine how salty or fresh the water inside will be. In general, the functions of the vacuole include isolating materials that might be harmful or a threat to the cell, containing waste products, containing water in plant cells, maintaining internal hydrostatic pressure or turgor within the cell, maintaining an acidic internal pH etc… so I guess the answer can be both, but I would think that any water inside living creatures will tend to have dissolved solids in it, making it more ‘salty’,
