Question: This might be outlandish, but could miniscule nanotech robotics be utilized to neutralize infected (Cancerous) cells by entering the host body? Can these nanobots become sentient, and through random code compilation evolve into predatory synthetics and target humanoid species? Will there be a nanobot revolution if these technologies are utilized before the proper safety precautions are implemented? Please provide an example in which nanobots can be implemented in society to advance human life without the danger of them becoming sentient and revolting against organic species. Thank You

Hi shephardlr,
Nothing sounds outlandish in the world of Nanotechnology! These are certainly real and valid predictions for the future. Have you read anything that Ray Kurzweil has written? He is a futurist, so he gets paid to make predictions about where technology is headed for in the future. He believes that in 30 or 40 years, we’ll have microscopic machines traveling through our bodies, repairing damaged cells and organs, effectively wiping out diseases. Nanotechnology will also be used to back up our memories and personalities, just like a computer! There is research happening right now that could make this idea a reality. As for the robot revolution… hmmm… have you seen Terminator? It seems like a pretty scary future, but hopefully Arnold Schwarzenegger will come and save us all like he does to John Connor in Terminator 2. In Terminator 1 he was actually one of the scary killing robots, so we don’t want that… Hmmm, when I think about it, he only saved John Connor because he was the leader of the human resistance against the machines, so I guess the only way to avoid all this is to make sure you are fighting against the ‘singularity’ and hopefully get saved by a robot from the future.
Does this answer your question?
No, no, no… seriously though. We can’t be sure that robots will ever become sentient and if they do, why would they want to kill us? We would be like their gods and we could just have endless human-robot parties and celebrations. Not all nanotechnology scenarios have to end up bad!
