Question: In the section my topical day you say you would rather send robots into the water because we humans can't stay under water long, how would this help in your line of work?

    To understand the processes in the ocean you have to observe them in all states. When it is stormy, at night, when it is flat calm, etc. You have to observe, how things interact with each other, and sometimes just follow a bit of water to see how it changes rather than stay in one place and observe the water passing by. Robots can stay at sea for a long time. The ARGO float is simple. All it does is sink, wait a while and come back to the surface while measuring stuff. They can stay at sea for 7 years and have revolutionised our understanding of how oceans move and mix.
