As a hydrographer I spend two weeks exploring the wreck of the cruise ship Lusitania with robot submarines. That was great, we had a manned submarine too, but that got stuck in fishing nets one day and that incident really drove home why we use automatic and robotic sensors and platforms. If you get a robot stuck you lose money, if you get a person stuck you lose a life.
Wow simon that is really cool. I haven’t invented anything, but I have worked on some big projects were I have changed the idaes of the developers to include structures – like animal bridges over the road – to protect wildlife.
Wowwwy! No I haven’t done anything as cool as these things that Simon and Shona have done. I can’t say I’ve invented anything either. Maybe I’ll have to get back to you in 10 years time with some experience!!
I havent invented anything yet but the method I am working on at the moment for my PhD is very new and innovative. There is only a few scientists around the world doing the method I am doing. It basically allows you to sequence DNA that is in the environment (as animals shed skin cells into the environment these cells contain DNA and also DNA from bacteria and fungus, etc which are present in the environment). This has lots of potential applications which I am testing out now. I am seeing if the method can be used for surveys (to find out what animals are present in a habitat), for river health assessments and for drinking water health as well as a bunch of other things. So I suppose you could say thats kind of like inventing something-ish.
The coolest thing Ive ever changed though was teaching communities in Africa how to treat the environment better and why its important to look after their mangrove forests.
