Question: What would you like to say to climate change deniers?

Keywords: ,

  1. I’d like to explain the things that I see that have convinced me. Like the way that we measure the average temperature of the world each month and compare it to the average of the last 100 years. You should have some months hottter than the 100 year average and some cooler. But for the last 27 years every single month has been hotter than the 100 year average. https://grist.org/news/if-youre-27-or-younger-youve-never-experienced-a-colder-than-average-month/

But mostly I’d like to tell that it doesn’t matter if you are convinced or not, we should still act. It’s simple:

If we act on climate change, and we are right that it exists: all good.
If we act on climate change and it didn’t exist: well, we spend a bit of money and we use more renewable energy and we get better at dealing with floods and cyclones. So it’s ok.

If we DON’T act on climate change and it doesn’t exist: all good……BUT
If we DON’T act on climate change is it DOES exist: we will have to deal with a whole lot of change in a very short time and it will cost a lot more and hurt a lot more people and critters than if we act now.

So stop arguing and go plant a tree, or buy a solar panel!!

  2. I agree with Elizabeth, I’d like to explain to them the evidence for climate change.

But I also believe that there are two parts the Climate Change, the natural change and the human influence speeding up this change. The earth has been through a lot of temperature change and at the moment we are in a Natural Warming period.

It was only 10,000 years ago that the sea levels where so low, the Gulf of Carpenteria (northern Australia) was an inland freshwater lake. You could walk to PNG and Indonesia without getting your feet wet. The Great Barrier Reef did not exist as it does today.

About 9000 – 8000 years ago the temperature started to rise, melting some of the ice around the world and by 7000-6000 years ago the water levels had increase to what we see today, so we are in a warm part of the natural climate cycle.

The problem we are trying to solve is “are humans speeding up this natural cycle with our impacts on the earth”

Climate is going to change, we can’t stop it from changing. But human activities must not increase the speed that the climate changes. If climate changes too quickly then the animals and reef will die, because they don’t have time to change their adaptations to the new temperature.

  3. What climate change deniers are actually saying is “But what if we go to all that effort to make the world a better place and its all for nothing??”. Haha.
I agree with Elizabeth and Shona. I would like to show them all the evidence we have and explain it to them. Then I would say to them:
What is more likely? That millions of scientists across the world, living in different countries, speaking different languages, studying all different kinds of science somehow all got together and said ‘I know what’ll be funny, lets make up a fake story about how the world is heating up to fool people’
    OR
That we’re actually telling the truth?

  4. I also agree with what the other scientists have said, but there has been research that has shown that many climate change deniers will not be convinced by scientific evidence. This is because their opinions are based in their own values and not on the facts.

The idea of having to change their lifestyle can be very frightening for some people and so they choose to deny the facts of climate change because it allows them to carry on living their lives without change. This is not helped by the fact that you can find anyone who will support any crazy point of view on the internet – climate change deniers love to use these people as ‘evidence’ for their values-based point of view.

Given this, as well as the facts, I would like to ask the deniers to consider whether their opinion is just an easy way out of a very serious global problem.
