Question: Why are you studying the Pilargidae? Why do you collect insects?

My brother and I used to collect insects which are frozen in glass but now I collect crystals and gemstones. It must be really exciting when you find a new specie. I think it would be really fun to find new species. I think I like gemstones, crystals and minerals in general. It would be awesome to be able to mine and find minerals! I think that will be a hobby of mine when I grow up. @shona @shona @shona

Oh that awesome that you collect crystals and minerals. I travelled out to Winton and met a miner, he had his own opal mine on his property. I though that was really cool. You could be a geologist and go work for the gold mines!

That would be really fun! @Shona I have a little display case which I sort them in each section. My favourite is probably a Fossil stone which is a gem/crystal which has a whole heap of small fossils in it! 😀
My grandparents occasionally go out to Western Australia to go gold mining. He gave me a small piece of gold and it is REALLY heavy. They also brang these rock (quite clay looking) and when you put them in water they go really shiny and they look kind of like wet pastels. @shona @shona @shona @shona
Hi isla12321,
It sort of just happened. I found one new species while I was working in Gladstone. Then I met a pilargidae expert from the Museum in Darwin. We decided to get a grant together to pay for us to look at all the pilargidae in Australia and see if there were new species. We end up find about 30 new species!!
The insect collection I have is just a hobby. I have about 50 insects, but I don’t collect as much as I use to. I now collected Antique Microscope slides from the 1820 – 1900.
Do you collect anything?
