Question: do any of you scientist work with dangerous tools

  1. yes I do… the sediment grab (photo is in my profile) if it snaps shut accidentally it can cut off your fingers… we have to be very careful with it. I also work with dangourous chemicals, like alcohol and formalin. Formalin causes cancer and 99% alcohol can explode!

With any dangourous equipment or chemical we allways get training so we know how to use it properly and safely.

  2. I no longer work with anything dangerous, but last year I used to work with liquid nitrogen. It is dangerous for two main reasons:

    1. It is extremely cold. It is -196 degrees Celcius, so if you touch it for too long it can give you terrible burns.
    2. It turns into a gas very rapidly and when it does this it expands to 600 times its volume. This means if you have 1L of liquid nitrogen, you will eventually have 600L of nitrogen gas. It can be dangerous if it is sealed in a container and pressure from the gas builds up, essentially creating a bomb.

  3. No dangerous stuff for me. I did once do science shows with a giant tesla coil like this. https://electricmuseum.com/?p=20. It wasn’t all that dangerous but it looked impressive
