My dad was my main encouragement and inspiration to study science. He was actually an artist when I was growing up, but he has a love of science that led him to build his own telescopes. He is what I would call a hobby scientist – he takes photos of the sky with instruments that he has built from scratch! You can even see these photos here: https://www.panetix.com/astronomy/galaxies/galaxiesNGC1-999.htm
He uploads photos that he has taken of galaxies that are billions of light years away. This will never cease to amaze me. He really fostered my love of science through these hobby science projects.
I would have to say my parents too, they took me to museums, zoo’s and got me my first microscope. They opened my eyes to the natural world. I think also my biology teacher in gr12, because he helped me pick the right University course to be a scientist.
Its funny we’ve all said our parents! I always had pet dogs growing up and Ive been an animal lover for as long as I can remember. My dad always took me to museums and he loved nature documentaries so I ended up loving them too because we would watch them together. So I suppose it was my parents who got me into nature in the first place but I had a great biology teacher when I was in high school too. He was my fave teacher and he made science fun because he was really funny and witty. You couldn’t win an argument with him that’s for sure! So its partly down to him as well.
I find inspiration on a daily basis though by following organizations like the Sea Shepard and The black fish and Project awareness. I think the work they do for conservation is amazing.
